Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation (ASSIST) is aiming to raise P750,000 in donations to build an organization that can create community kitchens around urban areas in Metro Manila.

The organization launched KuBO (Kusina ng Bayan sa Oras na pangangailangan or Community Kitchen in Times of need) to build community kitchens for family beneficiaries under GlobalGiving’s Accelerator Program.

GlobalGiving is an international crowdfunding project that assists and trains non-profit organizations in their campaigns and initiatives.

The program is designed to be scalable to sustain the community, while educating and empowering the target beneficiaries in “food preparation, hygiene, and sanitation.”

“We are planning on two types of community kitchens,” said Patricia Catu, the events and partnerships coordinator of ASSIST and project head of KuBO. “A fixed community kitchen, and a mobile kitchen that’s like a food truck and used for rapid response.”

“ASSIST will be running the community kitchen. It will be incorporated into our flagship projects,” Catu added.

The concept itself is still in its early stage, due to the difficulties of meeting and establishing partner communities brought by social restrictions and safety precautions. However, through the fundraiser, it will be easier to build the physical kitchen in a community faster.

According to a recent SWS survey, around 4.2 million Filipino families experienced involuntary hunger due to the lockdowns to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The lockdown has also increased the unemployment rate to a record-high as 7.2 million Filipinos lost their jobs as businesses closed.

The campaign started last June 8 and will run until June 27, and interested donors may pledge on their website or through bank transfers.

Community kitchens eyed to provide for poverty-stricken areas

ASSIST is known internationally for its involvement in promoting sustainable practices and social development, particularly in Asia and Africa.
