Special School Aid calls for individuals to sponsor PHP 100 for a CWD beneficiary to acquire a kit containing notebooks, pens, pencils, crayons, and hygiene essentials.

One of the problems that arose when the pandemic struck was how education can be continued and developed despite being stuck in quarantine. This is especially true for Children with Disabilities (CWD), whose educational development requires resources and professionals carefully suited to their needs.

August was said to be the target month for classes to resume. However, with limited resources due to the effects of the lockdown amid the pandemic, families are struggling to earn for the coming days.

The transition to online education itself proved to be difficult to include and give access to low-income and underprivileged communities.

Kits for Kids

Project Smile, a non-profit organization that builds fundraising campaigns for PWDs and CWDs, began #LikeAllKids to “break the stigma, educate the youth, and cultivate a more accepting Filipino society.” Under the campaign, Special School Aid was launched to provide educational material for children with special needs.

No matter what, learning must continue,” said Project Smile Founder, Sam Tamayo. “And at Project SMILE, we believe that children with disabilities (CWDs) are just like other kids, who grow and develop well when provided with the right support.

To Project Smile, education must be inclusive in all forms, with PWDs also being prioritized when creating COVID-19 response. According to a UNICEF report in 2018, around 5.1 million children have a disability.

“To achieve a resilient and progressive future for the Philippines, we must ensure that no person gets left behind –  and that includes looking after the welfare of children with disabilities,” said Tamayo in an email to OffCrowd

Beneficiaries come from parent groups from Rizal. The campaign aims to earn PHP 30,000 worth of school supplies by the end of July. Interested sponsors can donate to Project Smile through their website.
