Pasig Climathon aims to find local solution for climate crisis

Hosted by Pasig City, the hackathon focused on solving the climate crisis will be the first in the Philippines.

Organized by SCALE, the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde (CSB), Hub of Innovation For Inclusion, and Future Proof PH, Climathon will bring developers from all over Metro Manila to join in an overnight hackathon to build an efficient and sustainable solution to quickly address climate change this October 25 – 26, 2019.

Carla Mumar, CEO of SCALE, was inspired by youth activist Greta Thunberg and sought for opportunities to take action.

“I wanted Filipinos to be aware and really understand what is happening to our climate,” she said. “I have been trying to do my small part in this climate crisis and I was also driven and moved by a young Climate Activist, Greta Thunberg. I felt ashamed that as an adult, and as a global citizen that I was not doing more. But this young lady schooled me right. So I said to myself, this opportunity did not happen by accident, there is a reason for everything and I better get others to join in and collaborate to ensure our nation moves the needle on climate issues whatever it takes.”

Supported by the Pasig City local government, and its commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2028, the climathon hopes to answer two key challenges: waste reduction and mobility.

According to a survey done in 2016, Metro Manila produces 9,212.92 tons of wastes per day. Most of which goes into our water systems, with Pasig River being the 2nd world’s biggest source of plastic waste dumped into the ocean.

Climathon will not only challenge developers, changemakers, and critical thinkers to come up with solutions together – but for Pasig City to implement the ideas.

“The winners of the climathon challenges will have the opportunity to implement their solutions to Pasig City. It is not about the competition it is about coming together and creating the best and relevant solutions that can help Pasig City,” said Mumar.
